Nightlife

Florence offers many possibilities how to spend a pleasant evening. Opera and concert lovers appreciate the annual festival “Maggio Musicale Fiorentino”, which takes place from half of April to the end of June. Florentine theatre world is very changeable and lively because – as well as most of Italian cities of comparable size – does not have its own town theatre with stable ensemble of players. Despite this fact, many of about 200 performances played during one season are really worth seeing. They offer us a representative cross-section of theatre production of all Italian productions. Excellent ballet performances are held during the winter season in “Teatro Comunale” and in July within the framework of the “Estate Fiesolana” festival. There are also nightclubs and jazz bars but their number is limited. Here is a list of them.

Love for sale

Michel de Montaigne wrote in his diary during the travel across Italy: “While public females in Rome or Venice show off for their customers by windows, in Florence they stand and offer themselves in the streets during the most remunerative hours. This was valid until 1950s when deputy Merlin achieved closure of Case chiuse or Case d´appuntamento in whole Italy and since then is prostitution officially illegal, however, every hotel warden can provide applicative information. Ladies offer their services mostly along the “Viali”- a circular boulevard in the centre. Individuals of both sexes wait in the “Porta Prato” quarter, pre-eminently in the “Cascione” park.
